Mechina

THE MECHINA PROGRAM at Ohr Somayach was formed in 2007 in order to bridge the introductory Shoresh and upper-level Intermediate programs. This program offers motivated students of all backgrounds the opportunity to develop textual skills in a Yeshiva environment. The highlight of the Mechina program is the close bond that students form with Rebbeim, mentors, and each other.

CLASSES ARE HIGHLY-INTERACTIVE and are designed for students to achieve basic self-sufficiency in learning and understanding Jewish texts, including Talmud, Torah with its commentaries, and Halacha (Jewish law).

IN THE MORNING, students engage in Talmud study. Students develop vocabulary and reading skills and learn to analyze Talmud in order to reach proficiency and independence in Talmud study. In addition, students gain an understanding of the breadth and depth of the Talmud and its commentaries.

IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON, students choose courses from a broad range of subjects, including Ulpan (intensive Hebrew language study), various Jewish philosophy classes, Chumash, Mussar (character development), Halacha (Jewish law), and Neviim/Kesuvim (Prophets and Writings). These courses allow students to gain broader experience and insight into Jewish values and a Torah way of life.

THE LATE AFTERNOON is set aside for chevrusas, one-on-one tutorials. Students have the opportunity to enhance their learning by studying privately with a Rabbi or an advanced Yeshiva student. Furthermore, Chevrusas act as a mentor, guide, and role model who can counsel students through their Ohr Somayach experiences and beyond.

MECHINA IS LOCATED on the Ohr Somayach campus in Jerusalem, and is walking distance of the Old City, the Western Wall, and the city center. Full room and board are provided and Shabbos meals will be arranged. Tuition will be considered on a personal basis.

THE MECHINA REBBEIM STRIVE to assure that all students’ needs are addressed on a personal level. The warm relationships that students form with the Rebbeim serve as an excellent resource for their stay here at Ohr Somayach as well as for the rest of their lives.
