The Talmudic Sages were divided between those living in Eretz Yisrael and those in Babylon. When the latter referred to their colleagues in the Holy Land they sometimes used the term sham (there) or maarava. The latter term means "west" and was a geographical description of Eretz Yisrael being located to the west of Babylon, the Iraq of today.
