The Gemara Shabbos 10b say : "A man should not differentiate between his children. Because of the two coins worth of wool (the fine woolen coat) with which Yaakov showed favor to Yosef more than his brothers, his brothers hated him and eventually our Fathers descended into Egypt." It would seem then from the Gemara that this coat incited the hatred of his brothers. However, on Yom Tov davening after the blessing of the Kohanim, the congregation says the following prayer : "May you grant that we find love, favor, kindness and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who behold us. just as you granted Yosef, Your righteous one at the time that his father garbed him in a fine woolen coat." (ArtScroll Siddur p. 701). Resolve the contradiction. ============================================================================== Answers to Last Week's Questions - Parshas Vayishlach Rashi Questions 1. Esau admits to Yaakov's right to the brochos. 5. (Rashi 36:12) To teach how important the family of Abraham was. Timna was the daughter of a chieftain, yet she was willing to be a concubine to be part of the family of Abraham. ============================================================================== Bonus Question It was the guardian angel of Esau who wrestled with our Father Yaakov and sought to destroy him. Failing to prevail, the angel injured Yaakov's thigh. The mitzvah not to eat the gid hanashe hints at the message of this story. When the angel touched Yaakov's thigh he was touching all his descendants subjecting them to future affliction at the hands of Esau. Throughout our long bitter galus, the nations have often tortured us trying to destroy us. The mitzvah of the gid hanashe strengthens us by reminding us that though we suffer, we will endure. In the end we will emerge victorious over our torturers as did our Father Yaakov over the guardian angel of Esau. ============================================================================== Ohr Somayach produces three lists: weekly - summary of the parshas hashavua parasha-qa - questions and answers to the parshas hashavua ask - Ask the Rabbi Column To have any of these lists delivered automatically to your Compuserve E-Mail box, send the message: subscribe {listname} {firstname} {lastname} to: INTERNET:listserv@jerusalem1.datasrv.co.il To unsubscribe, send the same message with the word "unsubscribe" Send all your comments, quesitons and suggestions to: INTERNET:newman@jerusalem1.datasrv.co.il ============================================================================== Jewish L EEEEEEEE Prepared by Ohr Somayach Instutitions J L E 22 Shimon Hatzadik Street, POB 18103 J L Exchange Jerusalem 91180, Israel J J L E Tel: 02-810315 Fax: 02-812890 JJJJ Learning EEEEEEEE Internet: newman@jerusalem1.datasrv.co.il ==============================================================================
